Explore Srilanka’s Wildlife Tour – 13 Days

Colombo – Kandy– Nuwara Eliya –Udawalawe - Yale – Mirissa – Bentota -Colombo

Though Srilanka is a small island but it is well known for its cultural heritage and spectacular beaches and is one of the best wildlife destinations in South Asia.

This exotic tour of Srilanka begins from the busy and vibrant city of Colombo. It is the largest city and former administer capital of Srilanka. Life in Colombo is full of contrasts – from huge impressive colonial-styled buildings and massive temples to busy and chaotic areas with narrow streets packed with people shopping in vibrant markets.

From Colombo proceed to former capital –Kandy via visiting the elephant orphanage named Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to almost hundreds of baby and old orphaned elephants. One can get close to an elephant and personal during morning feeding and river bathing. In Kandy you will visit one of the most sacred site of Buddhism - The Temple of the Tooth Relic.

From Kandy, take a scenic train journey up into the Hill country Nuwara Eliya also known as “little England”. This awesome train journey can take you through beautiful mountains, waterfalls and tea plantations.

Next few days, visit the lush green forests and beautiful wildlife national park. Experience game drive in Udawalawe National Park filled with Asian wild elephants, wild buffalos, sambar deer and leopards. The tour then takes you to Yala National park which is one among the foremost places to spot elusive leopards.

Afterward, head towards the south coast town of Mirissa located in the southern tip of Srilanka and enjoy the most stunning sunrise and sunsets. After Mirissa, it’s time to unwind and relax on the golden sand beaches of Bentota, staying in world-class hotels. The coast around is dotted with turtle hatcheries. Here enjoy sun, sand and unwind at the beach.

  • Day 1 - Arrive Colombo

    Upon arrival at the Bandaranayake International Airport (Colombo Airport), you will be received by your chauffeur and transferred to the hotel. The day begins with a visit to one of the most important places of learning and spirituality - The Gangaramaya Temple. Afterwards, visit the Seema Malaka Temple, a tiny temple that is built on a lake and can only be reached by a small bridge. Rest of the day is at your own pace. Overnight will be at Colombo.

    Day 2 - Colombo to Kandy By road 135 / 4hrs

    After breakfast, drive to Kandy en route visiting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. It is a home for nearly 84 young and old elephants. Later, reach Kandy in the evening and check in to the hotel. Rest of the evening is at leisure. You could either rest at your lovely hotel or explore the city with your chauffeur, e.g. walking around Kandy Lake in city center or go shopping in the local markets. Overnight will be at Kandy.

    Day 3 - In Kandy

    After breakfast, take an interesting visit to Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya which boasts 300+ varieties of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Thereafter, witness a vivid and traditional Rangahala Cultural Dance (Kandyan Dance) before walking to the nearby Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic - Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist shrine. Overnight will be at Kandy.

    Day 4 - Kandy to Nuwara Eliya By train 80kms / 5hrs

    After breakfast, take a morning train(subject to availability) to Tea country – Nuwara Eliya which is one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. This leisurely train ride takes about approx five hours. Upon your arrival at Nanu Oya Railway Station, your chauffeur guide will pick you up and escort you to the hotel. Rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight will be at Nuwara Eliya.

    Day 5 - In Nuwara Eliya

    Start your day early as you drive to Horton Plains for a walk through the National park. It takes about 3-4 hours of easy trek and you will see sambar deer, waterfall, diverse flora & fauna and the stunning views over World's End. In the afternoon, pay a visit to a tea plantation and a tea factory, where the world's best Ceylon Tea is produced. After learning about the process of manufacturing tea, get hands-on experience of tea picking and don't forget to sip a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory. Overnight will be at Nuwara Eliya.

    Day 6 - Nuwara Eliya to Udawalawe National Park By road 150 kms / 4hrs

    After breakfast drive towards Udawalawe National park to spot the famous Srilankan elephant. Udawalawe was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. It lies on the boundary of Sri Lanka's wet and dry zones. Other than the elephants, the park is home to water buffalo, monitor lizards, sambar seer and the occasional leopard, as well as it is an exciting location for bird enthusiasts. Take an afternoon game drive in Udawalawe National park and return to the hotel for a night. Overnight will be at Udawalawe.

    Day 7 - Udawalawe to Yala National Park By road 85 kms / 2hrs

    After breakfast proceed to Yala National park. Upon reaching, freshen-up and take an afternoon game drive to site elusive leopard. Overnight will be at Yala National Park.

    Day 8 - Yala National Park to Mirissa via Bundela National Park By road 142 kms / 4hrs

    After breakfast leave for coastal town of Mirissa en route visiting Bundela National Park which is a home to the magnificent greater flamingo and also have decent number of Asian elephants. Take a game drive and proceed towards Mirissa. Mirissa still offers the charm of an idyllic fishing village while providing excellent accommodation choices, catering for all budgets and needs. Enjoy walks along un-crowded beaches, still untouched by mass tourism and watch the fascinating and famous stilt fishermen. Reach Mirissa and relax at the Mirissa beach. Overnight will be at Mirissa.

    Day 9 - In Mirissa

    After an early breakfast, we will go on a whale & dolphin watching tour along the coast of Mirissa. The waters of Mirissa in the southern coast of Sri Lanka are home to some of the largest whale and dolphin colonies in the world. Good time to see these nature’s giants is between November till May. Rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the beach. Overnight will be at Mirissa.

    Day 10 - Mirissa to Bentota via Galle By road 95kms / 2hrs

    After breakfast, proceed to Bentota en route visiting the Galle fort which is Srilanka’s best preserved colonial townscape. Here, streets are lined with Dutch period villas and old churches. Originally built in 1588 by the Portuguese, it was extensively fortified by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. A few must visit places include the serene Dutch Church – which oozes history from its simple white stone exterior, surrounded by granite tombstones of former Dutch settlers – the harbor, the Dutch Cultural Museum and the National Maritime Museum. It is a delightful place to wander and explore. Later transfer to hotel in Bentota to enjoy and relax near the beach. Overnight will be at Bentota.

    Day 11 In Bentota

    Enjoy leisurely breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast enjoy short boat ride through mangrove forests to a cinnamon plantation. Later you can experience water sport activities or relax on the beach. Overnight will be at Bentota.

    Day 12 Bentota to Colombo

    After breakfast travel to Colombo en route visiting Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda. Upon arrival in Colombo, you will be transferred to the hotel. The evening is free at your own pace. Overnight will be at Colombo.

    Day 13 Colombo Departure

    After breakfast, visit Colombo by driving through the commercial and city center known as the Fort. Visit Pettah market and the National Museum. You could also visit a Buddhist Temple and a Hindu Kovil to experience the diversity of religion. If time permits, you may also go some shopping. Later, as per your flight timings, you will be transferred to the airport to take a flight back home with sweet memories of the tour. TOUR ENDS !
